Aerion Corporation of Reno, Nevada is developing a new generation of practical and efficient supersonic aircraft. Its AS2 supersonic business jet currently is being designed with support from Airbus Group and is scheduled to make its first flight in 2019, with certification in 2021. The AS2 will cruise at Mach 1.4 with a range objective of greater than 5,000 nautical miles. The AS2 shaves hours off of long-range missions, cutting a trans-Atlantic flight by about three hours and a trans-Pacific flight by about four and a half hours. The key enabling technology is a supersonic natural laminar flow wing, developed through extensive testing with NASA. Supersonic laminar flow can reduce skin friction drag over the wing by as much as 90 percent, and over the entire airframe by as much as 20 percent. Reductions on this scale lead to fuel efficiencies and range performance that make supersonic travel a realistic alternative to today`s subsonic jets. Since announcing its collaboration with Airbus Group in September 2014, the company has been on an accelerating growth path and today seeks top engineers in a variety of disciplines.
