El Paso County

The El Paso County Sheriffs Office has always been dedicated to providing the Citizens of this community with the best possible quality service available. There are several specialized sections within the Sheriff's Office that have been put in place to assist in that quality service. Traffic, Crime Reduction Unit (CRU), Community Resource Officers (CRO), Victims Assistance, Volunteer Coordinators, and Accreditation teams are only a few of the many sections working behind the scenes and not always in the public view. This year the El Paso County Sheriff's Office has added a K-9 unit to those specialized sections. Three German Shepherd Dogs were brought to the office. On February 17, 2003, the office took delivery of Ivor, Chase, and Justice, three very intelligent and very highly driven German Shepherd Dogs. The K-9 Unit serves as a manpower multiplier and assists the Sheriff's Office in providing the quality service the El Paso County Community deserves. Since February 17, 2003, Ivor, Chase and Justice, as well as their handlers have undergone several months of training. The K-9 Unit also trains weekly to keep and maintain the high level of expectations set forth for Ivor, Chase and Justice. They have been activated for work inside the El Paso County Jail facilities and for patrol. These K-9's are trained in Narcotics Detection, Tracking, Area Searches, Suspect Apprehension, and Handler Protection. They are certified with the U. S. P. C. A. (United States Police Canine Association). We are very proud to bring this unit to the citizens of the El Paso County community. Sergeant Bob McDonald, K-9 Supervisor, along with Deputy David Yarbrough and K-9 Ivor, Deputy Mark Miller and K-9 Chase, and Deputy Sean Hartley and K-9 Justice are extremely committed to utilizing this unit for the good of the community. All K-9's used by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office are USPCA certified in narcotic detection, as well as tracking.
