The Chief Talent Officer (“CTO”) will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team and work closely with the COO, firm leadership, and the broader partnership to oversee all of Perkins Coie’s legal talent development. The CTO is preferred to be based in the Seattle (Headquarters), San Francisco or Chicago offices of the firm and will travel to other firm offices regularly.
The CTO will provide leadership and strategic direction over the firm’s legal talent management processes, including recruitment, integration, professional development, retention, and succession planning, as well as the performance management and compensation programs. In collaboration with firm leadership the CTO’s primary focus will be to design and execute a strategic approach to legal talent management to support the firm’s 1,000 lawyers, ensuring alignment with the firm’s strategies and tailoring programs and processes to meet the unique needs of all the practice groups.
Major responsibilities include: contributing to overall firm strategy and business objectives by defining the overarching strategy for legal talent, measuring talent and performance through defined metrics, and providing reporting and analytics to drive business decisions. The individual will ensure that all legal talent management policies, procedures, and processes are aligned with the firm’s culture and its values of teamwork and collaboration, ensuring diversity and inclusion continue to be key elements of the firm’s recruitment and employment practices.
Candidates must have meaningful experience both as a practicing attorney and in talent management at the executive level. Proven leadership ability in effective legal talent management strategy and implementation, recruiting, attorney development and succession planning, as well as performance and compensation management in a law firm of relevant scale and complexity to that of Perkins Coie. The successful candidate must possess unquestioned ethics, the ability to maintain confidentiality, and exceptional communication skills. The individual must be able to command credibility with the partnership and senior management and demonstrate a commitment to the highest level of excellence and professionalism. He/she must be collaborative and able to forge strong relationships, challenge the status quo sensitively and constructively, and be an intellectually agile self-starter.
