In 1907, East Carolina was founded to alleviate the desperate shortage of teachers in the eastern part of the state. East Carolina offers 99 bachelor’s degree programs, 77 master’s degree programs, 16 doctoral degree programs, five professional-practice doctoral degrees, and two intermediate degree programs (certificate of advanced studies and educational specialist in educational administration and supervision).
