Councilman Guthrie has been a resident of Harford County in the Joppatowne area for over forty years and is enthusiastically enjoying serving his second term on the Harford County Council. In 2008, he was elected as a delegate to the Democratic Convention held in Denver, Colorado, where he helped select the next President of the United States. In 1997, Councilman Guthrie was appointed and commissioned "Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay" by the Governor of Maryland for his maritime interest, support of protection and clean-up of the Chesapeake Bay, and because of his work with special needs children. Councilman Guthrie has been actively involved with helping special needs children since one of his grandsons attends John Archer School. On a lighter note, Councilman Guthrie had the honor of carrying the Olympic Torch for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah and after Cal Ripkin played his last game as a Baltimore Oriole, Councilman Guthrie volunteered his personal car to drive Cal around the field at Camden Yards. Cal autographed Councilman Guthrie's 1983 World Series baseball - the last ball signed by Cal in the field of play, as a Baltimore Oriole.
