The University of Miami (informally referred to as UM, U of M, U Miami, Miami, or The U is a private, non-sectarian university founded in 1925 with its main campus in Coral Gables, Florida, a medical campus in Miami city proper at Civic Center, and an oceanographic research facility on Virginia Key.
The university can trace its beginning to 1891 when members of the Church of the Brethren, moving west to California, founded Lordsburg College. When the surrounding agricultural community of Lordsburg was renamed to La Verne in 1917, the institution followed suit and La Verne College was established. To provide opportunities for students to achieve their educational goals and become contributing citizens to the global community.
