The Lutheran Home was established in 1906 out of love and concern to provide for retired and indigent pastors and teachers who could live out their lives in relative comfort and dignity. First known as the “Altenheim,” the same spirit remains at the heart of the Lutheran Home a century later. While we serve people of all backgrounds, it`s clear that faith and compassion remain the driving forces in care. Harwood Place, founded by a joint venture between the Lutheran Home and Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital, opened its doors in December of 1989. Now solely under the ownership of the Lutheran Home, Harwood Place fulfills the need for a retirement living community as a part of our continuum of care. It provides a beautiful, safe, and dignified campus for independent seniors who wish to reduce the responsibilities of home ownership and have available the socialization and support of health services such as assisted living. One hundred years later, we`re at the forefront of senior care, offering a full range of services, including independent living, short-term rehabilitation, assisted living, memory care assisted living, skilled nursing, adult day services, and host hospice care on-site. Additionally, we offer community programs and a Children`s Center with intergenerational programming, benefiting young and old alike.
VersAbility Resources has been providing comprehensive community-based supports for individuals with disabilities and their families for over 60 years. VersAbility currently serves over 1,400 individuals with disabilities annually in employment, community living, day support, and early childhood programs. Our service area includes Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, York County, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, as well as the ten counties on the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck. With a budget of $39 million and over 1,000 employees, we are a major business and employer. VersAbility Resources` mission is to "support individuals with disabilities in leading productive and fulfilling lives." Services in support of this mission range from coordinating developmental therapies for children to helping elderly caregivers plan for the future of their aging loved ones with disabilities.
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County is a public charity founded in 1979 by the Southwest Florida Estate Planning Council as a resource for caring individuals and the causes they support, enabling them to make a charitable impact on the community. Since our founding, the Community Foundation has been making the important connection between individuals` personal memories, passions, dreams and the fulfillment of their charitable goals. We help create permanent charitable funds of everlasting impact. These funds ensure that people of vision will have an enduring influence on the life of their community and the charitable causes they hold dear. With assets of over $292 million in more than 1,300 charitable funds, the Community Foundation awarded grants and scholarships totaling more than $16 million dollars this past year in the areas of education, health and human services, the arts, animal welfare, and the environment. Since our founding, more than $160 million has been invested back into the community through grants and scholarships. We are one of more than 750 community foundations in the U.S. and Canada enjoying rapid growth, making our field the fastest growing sector of American philanthropy. Tax-deductible gifts and bequests make up the permanent endowment of community foundations and annual income from investment of that endowment is used to match donors` charitable interests with needs in the community through grants and scholarships. Each community foundation is governed by a board of directors made up of respected volunteer business and civic leaders chosen to represent the rich diversity of the population.
